The Sydney

Sydney, a city, the capital of the state of New South Wales, Australia. Located off the southeast coast of Australia, Sydney is the largest city in the country and, with its magnificent harbor and position, is one of the most important ports in the South Pacific. By the early 19th century, when it was still a small town with prisoners and early settlers had settled in, trade had begun with the Pacific Islands, India, China, South Africa, and the United States.

Sydney's first sight, either at sea or in the air, is always spectacular. Located on the low hills around a large harbor with countless harbors and entrances, the city is dominated by the Sydney Harbor Bridge, one of the world's largest steel bridges, and the Opera House, with its shiny white shell - a molded roof that appears to echo the sails of many nearby harbors. The intricate confusion of water and buildings is impressive during the day or at night.

Because of its history as a major port and its status as a major international airport, Sydney is probably Australia's only international city with a true international spirit. It does, however, remain the most Australian city, with a good balance between its British heritage and the charm of the South Seas in its climate and nature. Sydney Area City, 10.3 square kilometers (26.7 square km); Greater Sydney Statistical Area, 4,790 square kilometers (12,406 square km). Pop. (2001) City of Sydney, 128,544; Greater Sydney Area, 3,997,321; (2011) City of Sydney, 169,501; Greater Status of Sydney, 4,429,034.

Sydney is an international tourist destination. Accommodation and hotels and restaurants are available throughout the city, though there are many, especially in central Sydney and in the Kings Cross area east of the business district. You may find restaurants that offer almost all kinds of international cuisine, although the famous Sydney oysters are among the most popular dishes. The Darling Harbor area west of the city includes the first modern city building for conventions, popular concerts, indoor games, and political rallies. The city's first gaming casino was opened in 1995.
