Pskov and Pechory

Located in the northwest of Russia, just 30km from Estonia, the ancient and historic Pskov with its well-protected kremlin and Trinity Cathedral is a strong attraction among tourists. Pskov dates back to 903, making it as old as the country itself and participating in the broadcast of the Baltic invaders over the years. Psovov has retained its medieval outer walls and is full of small, beautiful churches and beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture.

Check out the impressive river kremlin of Pskov, which was once the city's religious and ceremonial center. Within its collapsing walls, there is the magnificent Trinity Cathedral, which is the highlight of any visit to Pskov. Standing 256 meters high, the cathedral has a rounded roof, which can be seen from 30km away on a beautiful day, making it an outstanding feature. Inside the great temple there are magnificent paintings of 17th Century and the tombs of many princes buried there, dating back to the year 1138.

A short walk from Pskov brings you to the beautiful small town of Pechory, famous for its monastery, where you can explore the peaceful grounds of this still-functioning coffee that houses more than 70 monks. The palace was founded in 1473 when the first hermits settled in local caves. If the monastic order permits, enter the spooky burial caves where more than 10,000 corpses lie in coffins, piled high on top of each other on the walls of the tunnel.
