Mount Elbrus


Mount Elbrus, Russia's Gora Elbrus, is the highest peak in the Caucasus mountain range in southwestern Russia. It is an extinct volcano with two twins up to 5,500 feet (5,642) and 5,595 feet high. A volcano was formed more than 2.5 million years ago. Sulfur gases are still being extracted from the eastern slopes, and many mineral springs are flowing down their streams. A total area of   138 square miles (138 square kilometers) of Elbrus is covered by 22 glaciers, which feed the Kuban River and other Terek springs. Elbrus is a major mountain and tourist destination in the Caucasus region. In 1964 a large tourist and mountain complex was opened, with large sports facilities.


"Mingi-Tau" is the name given to Elbrus by the Balkars, the Turkish people of the Caucasus region. This translation translates as "like a thousand mountains," as a tribute to the greatness of the mountain.


This mountain also has a rich history. In Greek mythology. Zeus chained Petetheus to the mountain as punishment for stealing fire from Zeus and sharing it with mankind. The name also has its origin in Persia, a mountain in Persian mythology.

The weather is most conducive to rising in July and August, when the weather is relatively stable.

Even in summer, nighttime temperatures reach 18 F (minus 8 C). Temperatures above freezing can drop to 22 F (minus 30 C) during the day during the winter.

Winters are cold in the western part. It runs from October to April above 6,562 meters (2,000 m).

While the mountain is inland, located between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. These two huge bodies of water have an impact on the atmosphere and the design.

Mount Elbrus receives the highest peak in Europe. Another, peak, perhaps best known is Mont Blanc. It is the highest mountain in the Alps and the European Union. Its altitude is 4,810 m (4,810 m) above sea level.
