Bamberg - the gorgeous precious gem among German towns. Paul Pörtner, German novelist and playwright, declared his like to her: „In short: the foremost perfect example of a town, that also exists within the present day. And countryside, which God Himself created during a happy moment and, because it were, prepared for the location of a town.“
Bamberg, like Rome, is made on seven hills and was chosen by Emperor Henry II because the capital of his empire. He founded the bishopric of Bamberg in 1007, and laid the inspiration of a powerful medieval town. Several centuries later, a prince bishop “modernised” Bamberg and brought most of the people to hide up the medieval half timbered framework with state-of-the-art stone facades in baroque apearance, thus turning it into a singular example of a baroque city, filled with lavish splendour and playful decorative elements. Bamberg survived all the wars of the past centuries largely untouched and may be experienced because it was centuries ago. a piece of art itself, Bamberg harbours world-famous art-treasures and architectural highlights of all centuries since the center ages. the town fascinates visitors with its largest intact old city altogether of Europe and it's been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1993.
This life-size stone equestrian statue is that the oldest surviving medieval sculpture of its kind. And better still: the Bamberg Cathedral Horseman is filled with mysteries. He has been depicted on a bank note and as a well-liked Playmobil figurine, but nobody knows who he was. the various mysteries have made the Bamberg Cathedral Horseman so famous. He has become one among the foremost investigated statues ever, and yet science can only guess at the rider's identity. One theory is that he's Stephan I of Hungary, who was said to possess ridden to the cathedral to be christened. Another legend says the statue represents Philip of Swabia, the king who was assassinated during a visit to Bamberg in 1208.
